I must say that Thanksgiving must be the least restful of the holidays especially for working women. I mean talk about work! What I think is, cuz it's a labor of love, that the whole deal, the whole spectacle of it works to reinforce masochistic martyr fantasies women are conditioned to pursue. & oh I must love it! Cuz what did I do? I made
- roquefort grapes which were SO FUCKING GOOD rolled in creamed roquefort & then in toasted pecans
- potatoes au gratin which sounds very pedestrian but was not as I made it w/leeks & tons of expensive gruyére & freshly grated nutmeg & heavy cream
- cornbread dressing from homemade cornbread done "the right way" with fresh sage & thyme from my garden & a ton of bacon
- a fantastic stuffing of bread, buttery mushrooms, carmelized onions & celery & fresh oregano from my garden
- for true cranberry relish with red wine & fresh ginger & fresh orange juice
- creamy spicy pearled onions with my own roux
- fresh bitter salad with a homemade vinagrette of dijon, walnuts, shallot, garlic, and balsamic
- pineapple upside down cake with carmelized pecans & those crazy maraschino cherries on top!
- and I helped with the turkey that Christine pulled off with grace & panaché
We had Orangina, wine, raspberry sodas. We had olives & parmesan cheese-sticks. We had rich coffee. We had candles and christmas lights and heat. We went to the track, we watched Sex in the City. I LOVED every minute of it, cooking for people is one of my flat-out absolute most satifying endeavors, and the beauty, the savory, the romance of it all, rrrrr, orgasmic. But oy vey - such exhaustion. I am undoubtedly a real woman now.
sound like a Motown medley of flavor.
